EXAM QUESTION 1A. Creativity and Conventions

Has using conventions from real media texts in your work enhanced or impeded your creativity?

Conventions are features that regularly appear in music videos. For example in dance/electronic music bright colours, random shot conent, loose narrative are all common.

We stuck to it by editing a lot of the shots to make them all look different and random.
We also introduced Goodwins points.

Representation within our music video.

1. What/who is being represented?
we represent the character, costume, setting and lighting all in a realistic way thats relate-able to the audience.

2. How is that representation being created? e.g micro elements.
This representation is being created through the micro elements..
Costume: We kept the costume of the band members as ordinary, high-street clothing. This makes the band seem the same as the audience who are watching, making them feel closer and more relatable.

3. Why is this representation created in that way, what was your intention?
It is created in that way so that the audience can relate to people who don't like the cliche of a big star / fancy dress. Also the representation is created in this way because we wanted to portray the band as normal people who just want to have a good time.

4. What is the effects of the representation?
One of the effects of this representation is that the audience feels that they could relate to the band.

Music video

1. What is being represented

In our music video we represent the hip hop culture by having the singer wearing stereotypical hip hop clothes like hoodies and chains also there is props like baseball bats.

2.

The representation is partially being represented because the clothes and props represent the hip hop genre but the character is not representing it because he is a white boy with long hair which is not stereotypical of a hip hop singer.

3.

The representation is created in that way because the audience has to focus on the singer while they watch the video and they can clearly see that he is trying to represent the hip hop genre.

4.

The effect of this is having a appropriate music video for a song and in a sense keeps the continuity of the song and video together because they will both link together. it will also help to sell the artist too.

Music Video

1) What/who is being represented?
The location was represented as a local street/house which could be anywhere.
The artists were represented as a group of friends, down to earth, who 'decided to make a music video'. There is one person who is the particular lead singer.

2) How is that representation being created?
The costumes we used were linked together, like a clique. The shot types and the mise en scene showed the house, the street and the garden as it was, without change.
Hand held camera was vital in creating the correct image for our video as it fitted with our intentions. The editing was quick, which also fitted with the style of video we were trying to create. The lead singer is identified through close ups and longer footage time.

3) Why is this representation created in that way? What was your intention?
Our intention was to create relatability and an atmosphere of enjoyment, which we did through the above methods. It was also to aim it at the right audience, being young 'cool' teenagers.

4) What is the effect of the representation?
The feedback we received was positive and we seemed to have accomplished the task we set and our intentions came across well. This is likely because we had aimed it at the right audience and this was the audience that provided the feedback.

genre

do you think genres are timeless ?

Audience are constantly wanting more out of a film e.g horror, audiences want to see more gore, a higher scare. If audiences watched a horror film from 50 years ago there wouldn't b that element and it would be more comical than scary.

why do you think hybrid/sub genres are becoming more common ?

I feel they are becoming more common due to a demanding audience. makers of film have a challenge to surprise and attract audiences to make money. Hybrid genres are a norm now in the film industry and audiences expect to see this. sub genres are for ever growing with the demand of audiences wanting elements to films that best suit them and what they want to watch.

how does our thriller conform or challenge genre conventions?

Our media project conformed to genre conventions as the themes, settings, mood and format are all what you would expect for a thriller video of this era. As well as this, the genre could be defined through the performer. The killer is big and intimidating and this is typical of what you would expect for a killer in a thriller.

Genre

1) Do you think genres are timeless?
Yes because ultimately you can never change a genre that has already been created and there will always be enough people in the world to be interested in any given genre, even if they discontinue creating them, they will always still exist due to people's memories and old films.

2)Why do you think hybrid/sub genres are becoming more common?
Hybrid films are becoming more common because the audience always wants something new and exciting. The demand for hybrid films is higher because of the sheer amount of films available to audiences, we all want something that we haven't seen before and lacks the predictability of single genre films. Many companies compete for the biggest audiences/profit, so there will always be competition with other companies to make the biggest film and the most profit.

Sub-genres are virtually the opposite of hybrids in that they are very specific and are aimed at a niche audience, as opposed to hybrids which are aimed at the most people possible.

3) Choose one of your videos - how does it conform to or challenge genre conventions? = THRILLER
Our thriller both conforms to and challenges genre conventions.
Janet Steiger - If we were to continue the film, a romantic sub plot would have evolved through the (female) hacker and one of the Government agents linked with the case. Our film is in accordance with Janet Steiger's 'Social conventions method' as we tried to follow what we perceive a thriller to be, and what society expects. This included things like the costumes and the misc-en-scene. However we broke some of the conventions as we had a female lead.

Robert Stam - Through the use of amateur actors, the audience would not be expecting certain characteristics of their characters. This left our plot options wide open as there were no preconceived expectations. However were we to use well known actors for our film, in accordance with Janet Steiger's theory, we would use actors relevant and known for film of our genre. For example, for the major Government leader we would use Morgan Freeman as he is well known for playing a power figure. However the audience has an expectation that Morgan Freeman would play a powerful, but nice character, so to play on this, we would subvert it to make him the antagonist as a twist at the end, assuming we would have created the full plot.

John Turby -

Section 1B - Genres

1. Do you think genres are timeless?
Some aspects of genres are timeless, with comedy the sense of humour has changed but it still holds the same effect. With romance and other genres it is the same concept.

2. Why do you think hybrid/sub genres are becoming more common?
It is becoming common as it is now expected and it has to be more common to be able to compete and be popular.

3. Choose one of your videos - how does it conform to or challenge genre conventions?
Refer to all 5 bullet points in detail.
The genre of the music video is comedy, we established this because it meets most of the genre conventions. The setting is very relaxed, which helps with the genre. The plot of the music video is just them having a normal casual day. The mood of the
1. Do you think genres are timeless

Yes, genres are timeless in the way that they are the same basic structure from the beginning. However, over time they change and adapt to cater for the wants of their current audiences.

2. I think that sub-genres and hybrid genres are becoming more popular partly because directors are looking for new ways to entertain their audience's, and looking for more ways to be creative and do something new. The audience also expect more from the film and want to get more entertainment from it. It's no longer enough for many mainstream films to commit to one genre, as people want more complex strorylines and structures.

3. Our music video conforms to a number of conventions of the electronic/danced genre, but at the same time, there are a lot of features that go against or differ to standard conventions. In terms of setting, the locations we used do not come under conventions of this genre. Most videos made for songs from this genre are live recordings from raves/concerts. Our video was in a room and a wood, neither are standard of the genre. The theme/content of the video does conform to conventions though we included a lot of dance scenes and routines synched to the video. We also made sure to use bright colours and quite disorientating imagery in the background. This sort of thing is seen in most video from this genre. The throwing of paint and bright colours also suggest a party/rave atmosphere which is also seen alot in dance videos. There is no narrative or link between lyrics and visuals as the song is not lyrically centered, and the majority of visuals are linked directly to the music. This is standard.

Script for xtranormal

Why so important to research target audience?

it is always important to research your target audience as it's esstential to know want the audience wants. If you don't do this well your product won't succeed within your intended target audience.

Who was your intended audience?
For our video we decided that our audience would be teenagers as the genre we interpreted the song as was indie rock

What would their expectation of the product be?

We feel that the target audience would want something edgy, but still conventional to the genre that we picked.

How did you attract your intended audience?

Stuart Hall's theory of Encoding /decoding

Hall believed in 'Encoding/decoding which had a major influence on cultural studies. This means that every individual interprets different medias from their own perspective. Therefore, we think that maybe, different social classes, for example may have conflicting opinions on the style of our music video.

Uses and Gratifications Theory;
This theory relates to understand mass communication. The theory places more focus on the audience, instead of the actual message itself by asking “what people do with media” rather than “what media does to people” It assumes that members of the audience are not passive but take an active role in interpreting and integrating media into their own lives. The theory also holds that audiences are responsible for choosing media to meet their needs. The approach suggests that people use the media to fulfill specific gratifications. This theory would then imply that the media compete against other information sources for viewers' gratification. So people who watch our music video will do for their our gratification rather than the message that the song entails.

Feedback you received from your audience
After we showed our rough cut to the class the feedback we got was on the whole very positive, they liked the hand held elements as it made it seem more personal than other music videos.

Concept 3: Audience

David Gauntlet
He discusses the role of popular media in people's lives. In particular he has focused on the way in which digital media is changing the experience of media in general.

Stuart Hall
Encoding/decoding- this is how we interpret the medias we watch differently depending on our own background, i.e middle class views.

Concept 3 - Audience

This Video explains your task for Thurday the 7th and Friday the 8th. We will watch each others videos once completed.

Analysis of my Children's film

Does your text have a clear story?
Yes I believe that the text has a clear story as there is some background information given by the narrator which clues in the audience to who the characters are and where they are. The dialogue is direct and any references from the past in the film are explained by the characters. For example the characters talk about why they are sitting outside instead of their secret base.

Is the structure linear / non linear / montage etc?
The structure of our film is linear as everything happens in the film as it would in real life (in sequence).

Are there key roles within the narrative?
Yes there are several key roles in the narrative, Levi Strouss' theory ties in with this as the key characters are binary opposites. For example Zig-Zag (hero) and Dr Fabulous (villain), even though the audience do not see Dr Fabulous in the extract he is an essential part of the narrative as he creates un-equilibrium for Zig-Zag and Barnarby. Hero / Villain binary opposites are very important for any movie as this is what makes the narrative interesting. The Hero / Villain character types are also part of Propps theory as he labeled all the different character types, he believed that all of these stemmed from old fairy tale and Mythological characters.

Is my text structured by cause and effect?
Yes as there is preparation at the beginning of the film which shows the usual equilibrium for the characters, then there is a complication which is when Zig-Zag's monkey is stolen aka the Chimp of Power by Dr Fabulous. Then there is transference when Zig-Zag acts upon this problem by going after Dr Fabulous to get the Chimp of Power back. As this was only the opening scene the struggle, return and recognition were not filmed. This is the structure that Todorov has set out, he says that the audience demand to have a beginning, middle and end, our film fits with this however many modern films no longer follow this structure and actually try to challenge the audience's expectations. Another point in Todorov's theory is that the audience always want to see the underdog succeed, I think that our film complies with this as well because the heroes are a bit down on their luck at the time as their previous Secret Hideout had been blown up by mistake. This makes them the underdogs and therefore the audiences favourites to succeed.

What are the audiences expectations of narrative in this genre?
The genre of the film that we made was comedy / mild action as it was intentionally made for children. Therefore I would have to say that audiences would expect this film to be quite light hearted and not offensive either. I think that one of the key characteristics of this film that make it upkeeping of the genre is it's easily distinguishable character types plus clear and common binary opposites. For example Zig-Zag (hero) and Dr Fabulous (villain) are clear character types and obvious binary opposites (rivals/enemies). This ties in with both Propp's and Strouss' theories.

What is the function of the narrative for audiences + institutions?
One of the functions of this video for audiences and institutions is to make them feel comfortable that the chracters will be ok and that nothing too dire will happen to them. Also it provides humour that is acceptable to anybody, this means that there will be no contraversie especially for the institutions like the producers so they won't have to worry that anybody will have a problem with it.
does your text have a clear story?
Yes. It is becuase from begginning to the end, the story has a clear narrative and the main story is clear through out the opening. The close up off the "top secret disk", shows the audience that the main focus off the opening is on that disk and the following shots will be influenced on this.

is the structure linear/non linear/montage?
The structure of our childrens film oppening is linear. furthermore the sequence focuses on the present day. the whole opening is kind off a montage as in the scenes quickly pass to then reveal the majority of the story in short succestion

are there key roles within the narrative? (propp/strauss)
Our Childrens film follows Propps Theory of 8 Characters. There is a hero and villan which are shown from the first two shots of the sequence. Furthermore the  the helper is introduced within the first sequence. This shows the audience that the rest of the film would follow these conventions.  The opening sequence also follows the Strauss theory, where there is a contrast and they rival each other for example the Hero and Villian.

is my text structure by cause + effect? ( Toderov)
the film will have a happy ending and it gives the audience something to relate to and something they want to see. as the film is just an opening i feel that the opening is clear and is what the audience want.

What are the audiences expectations of the narrative in this genre?
The audience, expect that and childrens film should end with a happy ending, and that the good guy will always defeat the evil person in the film. Additionally the audience expect there to be a fight between the two people and expect the good guy to come out on top.

what is the function of narrative for audiences and institutions?
narrative structure is important because it is a kids film everyone expects a happy ending and also kids can relate to the video.

Application of Narrative theory to our childrens film.

Apply all three narrative theories to your work/how does your film conform or not conform to the theory.

Theory one: Vladimir Propp.
He said that all character roles were based on chose from traditional myths or fairytales. He said each narrative had 8 characters. Narrative are usually driven by males.

The story line from our childrens film is about a boy who's dog is taken away by aliens, they rest if the film would consist of the boy searching for his dog. The use of aliens links to Propp's idea of using myths, where as the idea of the main character going on a quest to save his dog is similar to the story line of a fairytale. Instead if a prince looking for his princess its a boy looking for his dog who is his best friend, this puts a modern twist to the idea of a fairytale.

Theory two: Levi Strauss.
He said that viewers like to see characters that provide contrast and rival with each other, for example hero/villain, moral/unmoral.

The only contrast provided within the storyline of the childrens film is the aliens/humans which could link to the idea of hero/villain, the boy being the hero to save his dog and the aliens being the villains who took the dog in the first place. The use of aliens also creates the idea of natural vs supernatural.

Theory three: Tzvetan Todorov
He said that we always want to see the under dog succeed, and that the audience demand beginning, middle and end. Also we want a happy ending with all questions answered.

In our childrens film the under dog would be the young boy. We see him get bullied by other kids, suggesting hes a bit of a loner and an outcast. Although there is no middle or ending, the genre and childish theme of the film implies that the boy will succeed in finding his dog and that all questions raised by the dream like beginning will be answered.

1. Does my text have a clear story?
The childrens film does not have a clear storyline at the beginning. It opens with the young boy dreaming of the day his dog got taken away and then goes into live action when he wakes up, this may not be understood by all viewers. However at the end of the opening the viewer could understand that the boys dog has been taken by aliens and that the rest of the film will be his journey to get him back, like most childrens films.

2. Is the structure linear/nonlinear/montage?
It's a non linear structure because it begins with a dream and then goes from animation to live action to show the character is waking from the dream and is now in reality.

3. Are there key roles within the narrative? (propp/strauss)
The main character, who is young boy,  and the dog are key roles through out the plot. The aliens also play a key role within the plot as they act as the antoganist.

4. Is my text structured by cause and effect?
In our childrens film the events are structured my cause and effect, the dog gets kidnapped by aliens which causes the young boy to go looking for his "best friend".

5. what are the audiences expectations of narrative in this genre?
Happy ending / happy ever after
Fairytale
A morale
a problem and resolution

6.what is the function of narrative for audiences and institutions?
This type of video would be expected to end happily, even though the hero may be but through trouble and harm in the way to over coming the bad guy.

stuart hall theory

this theory is split into 3 main areas. dominant, opposition and negotiated.

dominant: this means that the director chooses to make the film portrayed in a different ways.

opposition: this is when the audience do not adopt the directors perception of the film and make their own views and perception.

negotiated: this is when the director and the audience understand each others perceptions but still keep mainly to their own perceptions

encoding is when the director creates a perception for the audience to adopt, and decoding is when the audience make a perception based on their up bringing, age, sex, lifesytle etc.

Applying Narrative Theories to our Childrens Film.

 Link to our Children's Film 'Broken Hearted Friends;

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRwscE0Ykfs

Does our text have a clear story?
We believe that 'Broken Hearted Friends' does have a clear story, the voice over suggests and tells the audience the story. At the end we used stills to show each character disappearing one by one to reflect the words of the main character.

Is the structure linear/non linear/ montage?
The way which we created our story line, was by using flashbacks. This created a non-linear structure within our story. We used pictures from the past and created them into a moving video to suggest the past.

Are there any key roles within the narrative (Propps/strauss)
There were key roles within our narrative, the character of Charlotte appears popular rich and talented, where as Stacey was shown and explained to be rebellious, less popular, however no mention to money. The main character of Lucy seems a outsider, un-popular and smart, no real talent. This was shown through the voice over again and also a few on screen images which reflects Strauss' theory of binary opposites within a narrative. However, our children's film opening doesn't relate to Propps theory of character roles being based on fairy-tales driven by males.

Is our text structured by cause and effect? (Todorov)
What has to be taken into account is that our clip is jsut the opening of a film. What is seen is step one to three of Todorov's theory. Equilibrium (explaining that they're really good friends, all is as it should be), disruption (suggestion that somethings happened to split them up) and recognition (this is shown through the visual aspect of 'Lucy' being on her own), however our film suggests that repair and a new equilibrium is to happen later on throughout the film.

What are the audiences expectations of narrative in this genre?
As it was a children's film, no drugs discrimination, horror, imitable behaviour languages nudity sex or violence is shown during this clip which is classified by the BBFC as a U. The story of the film had to be simplistic and relatable to young generations. Obviously there has to be some problem or upset, but the outcome will be reassuring to a young audience.

What is the function of narrative for audiences and institutions?
The institution is children's films, and because it's for a young audience the story-line has to go along with conventional ideas so the children watching have a set structure and positive experience from what occurs during the film. Where as if it didn't go with conventions parents will possibly not want their children watching it.

Children's film questions.

Propp's theory
We don't conform to Vlad's theory as we lack most of the conventional narrative characters, mostly due to the time limitations along side the lack of characters.
The character types we have managed to use in relation to our film are:
Donor - the person who puts the chemicals into the jelly.
Hero - the alien
Dispatchers - the girls who leave the box
Helper - the little alien and possibly the girl who enters at the end, if the story was allowed to progress further.

The narrative structure of our film follows the first two stages of Propp's 'journey' theory.
Preparation - the alien being made from the jelly and chemicals.
Complication - the alien being left on it's own to fend for itself.

It does conform to an extend to Propp's theories, but we didn't have the time to expand it to the length of completion.

Strauss
Human/Non-human
Little/Big

Todorov
Equilibrium - Human world, we haven't heard about the aliens
Disruption - The discussion of the chemicals being put in the jelly
Recognition - We actually see the result of this as the aliens appear.

Questions
1. Does my text have a clear story?
Our story doesn't get much beyond an introduction, so the storyline is still unclear to those who watch it, leaving it open for the audience's imagination.
2. Is the structure linear/non-linear/montage etc?
Linear. The story follows a simple pattern, with no flashbacks. Everything is explained as it goes along.
3. Are there key roles within the narrative?
Our hero character would become the alien, the dispatchers were the girls who left the box behind, the donor is the boy who 'created' the alien by adding chemicals to the jelly, and the helper would become the smaller alien.
4. Is my text structured by cause and affect?
Yes, it is structured by Todorov's theory as we followed the pattern of equilibrium, disruption and recognition. We would have continued this pattern throughout the rest of the film if we were to finish it.
5. What are the audience's expectations of narrative in this genre?
When we first thought about children's films, we immediately thought of animations, as it is a popular format for children's films at the moment due to Disney and Pixar. We think the audience also expect this, especially because of the technological advancements in this area. The general modern narrative expected from a children's film/fairytale uses Todorov, Propp and Struass's theories in conjunction with modern technological advancements, we have followed these theories in our opening to continue with this kind of structure of films.
6. What is the function of narrative for audience's and institutions?
The audience doesn't mind watching the hero in distress because they know it will end happily. However sometimes this can be predictable and films don't always follow this pattern. They may purposefully have a unexpectedly unhappy or unresolved ending to challenge the audience's expectations. However the 'norm' for children's films does follow this theory as children supposedly should not be exposed to the complexity of adult life.

Narrative work

Vladimir Propp's theory

1. hero - drug dealer simon
2. Villian - druggy
3. The Donor - none
4.The Dispatcher - The Druggy
5. The Helper - none
6. The false hero - none
7. The Princess - none
8. The Father - none

Preparation - The druggy is looking around for the dealer in a car park
Complication - The hero gets mugged by the druggy
Transference - The drug dealer runs out to try and catch him
Struggle - The hero has to try and find the druggy throughout the rest of it
Return - None
Recognition - None

Levi Strauss's theory

His theory is that there is contrasts in characters. There are only two characters shown in it which are the Drug Dealer and the Druggy, which shows that they are the only two characters that provide contrast in the Hero/Villain way.

Todorovs Theory

1. Equilibrium - The equilibrium is that they are both looking to do a normal drug deal
2. Disruption - It gets disrupted by the drug dealer getting mugged
3. Recognition - the audience knows something is wrong after he makes a quick get away
4. Repair - The Drug Dealer tries to repair it by chasing the druggy
5. New Equilibrium - There is no New Equilibrium.

1.Does my text have a clear story?
The text was partially clear as the audience can understand that the drug dealer has got mugged and needs to chase him to get the drugs back, but what is confusing is the perspective of who's side we are meant to be on due to the text being in an omniscient narration.

2.Is the structure linear/non linear/montage etc?
The structure is linear and we did this because we wanted to make the narrative of the film easy for the audience to understand because it was going to develop and have a lot of twists and turns in it. Todorov's  theory backs this up as we wanted the 5 stages of the narrative to be simple. Also by doing this it would allow there to be a new equilibrium that would allow the audience not to be confused at the end.

3.Are there key roles in the narrative?
There are some key roles in the narrative and both characters follow this as they are both a contrast to each other which helps to explain the narrative to the audience of one being a drug dealer trying to make a living and the other stealing the drugs and clearly being a bad character, this follows Levi Strauss's theory of characters that have a contrast of a Villain/Hero

4.Is my text structured by cause + effect?
It is partially structured by cause and effect as cause and effect as it has 4 of the 5 parts of Todorov's theory but the New Equilibrium is not involved in it.

5. What are the audiences expectations in this genre?
The audiences expectations are that the thriller needs to be thrilling and this is done in the thriller video by having a fast paced point of view shot of them running out of the buliding which builds tension and makes the audience nervous in it.

6.What is the function of narrative for audiences + institutions?
the narratives function is to make the whole thriller look like a drug deal that has gone bad and the rest of the film will focus on the drug dealer chasing him to get the drugs back. This is good for audiences as it is stereotypically thriller and good in the institutions.

Childrens Film

1.Our video shows a clear story conventional of a children's film. We have a Child who young audienece's can relate to. We then set up the theme of good and evil. Using a super hero who my character aspires to be and looks up to. We also have a villain at the end of clip, this sets up the potential plot.

2.The plot has a montage at the start which is appealing to young audiences as its entertaining, it shows the my character idolise a super hero on TV as he dresses up trying to be him.

3.the story has key roles within it, firstly james is the hero within the story, josh burr is the villain, chiv is the helper. these are the main roles within the film. the Strauss theory come within the film, this is because james is the hero within the film and josh burr is the villain so the opposite to james.

4. Yes, todorovs theory can be implemented into our childrens film. At the start of the film, everything is fine and there is a state of equilibrium. However, we couldn't find a disruption. But by the end, there is an attempt to repair the damage as james speaks to the camera and claims 'superheros will always provale.

5.  The expectations of Narrative in children's film is for it to be entertaining with not to many complex ideas. Good vs evil is current in a lot of children's film and is relevent in ours with the use of super hero's and villian's.

6. The hero is expected to win and the villain is expected to fail in his attempt to rule the world!

Application of Narrative theory to Batman Begins

Vladimir Propp

All characters roles are those based on myths and fairy tales.
Hero - Bruce wayne ( batman)
Villain - Henri Ducard
Donor - Lucious Fox
Dispatcher - The Bats
Helper - Alfred
False Hero - Henri Ducard
Princess - Rachel Dawes
Father -

Levi Strauss
Characters that provide a contrast and rival each other.
good/ evil
strong/ weak
Rich/ Poor
police/ Criminal

Tzvetan Todorov
He says we always want to see the underdog succeed, Even if he is put in danger we are happy to watch because we know he will come out on top.

Application of Narrative theory to Batman Beginning

Todorov believes in a series of events happening throughout a film. The equilibrium shows the happy and innocent childhood memories such as playing in the garden and going to the theatre with his family. This however is shown in a different way through flashback. This is then contrasted with the disruption which is when the child's parents are shot in front of him.

Levi Strauss believes in Binary Opposite. The opening we see rich/poor characters this is the difference between Tom Wayne and the man than shoots him. We also see male/female characters and the stereotype of men protecting women is made when Tom stands infront of his wife take the bullet.

Vladimir Propps 8 Characters
Hero - Bruce Wayne
Villain - Mugger
Doner - Louis Fox
The Despatcher - Bruce Wayne
The Helper - Alfred
The False Hero - Henri Ducard
The Princess - Rachel

Application of narrative theory's for batman begins

Propp's theory:

Hero= Bruce Wayne
Villian= Scarecrow/ Henri Ducard
Donor= Henri Ducard
Dispatcher= Henri Ducard/Alfred
The Helper= Jim Gordon
The False Hero= Henri Ducard
The Princess= Rachel Dawes
Father= Alfred

Levi Strauss theory:

Hero/Villain : Bruce Wayne is the hero while Henri Ducard and Scarecrow are the villains
Young/Old : The young Bruce Wayne and young Rachel Dawes are young while Alfred is old. This is done to make the film appeal to more audiences old and young as they can relate to them.
Rich/Poor:

Batman Fitting to the theories. (Narrative Theory)

Propps

hero: little boy
villain: guy who killed parents
donor: louis fox
the dispatcher: bruce wayne
helper: Alfred
The false hero:henri ducard
princess: rachel dawes

strauss
there are many opposites in this film, these are shown below:

batman's opposite is the big chinese guy, the polices opposite is the murderer, the opposite to the butler is the ninja guy, morlaity is with batman and immoral is with the murderer

todorov

todorovs theory is when there is different stages set in the film i.e. equilibrium and disequilibrium.

equilibrium is when he beats all the people up, the disequilibrium is when his family are killed, then the new equilibrium is when he gets trained to kill bad people.

Batman Begins

Propp's Theory:
Hero: Bruce Wayne/Batman
Villain: Lots of small villains, Scarecrow, the man who shot his parents, Falcone, Henri Ducard
Donor: Henri Ducard, Alfred
Dispatcher: Henri Ducard, the man who shot his parents
Helper: Alfred
False Hero: Henri Ducard, Scarecrow
Princess: Rachel Dawes
Father: Alfred and Bruce's father

Preparation: His parents get shot and he develops his fear of bats. Also, his time spent in prison.
Complication: He then figures out he needs help. Earlier on, he changed when his parents die.
Tranferance: He trains with Henri Ducard.
Struggle: Lots of little struggles, firstly minor villains (i.e. prison mates), Scarecrow, and finally Henri Ducard.
Return: He returns home.
Recognition: He gets the girl and all is restored in the world, until next time...!

Strauss
Young/Old - Minor (non-violent) conflict between Alfred and Bruce
                  - Parents and children
Rich/Poor - Bruce's family and friends are rich but a lot of the city is not, specifically the man who shot   his parents.
Male/Female - Bruce and Rachel.
Police/Criminal - Fairly major plot significance. The whole plot line relies on Bruce's vigilance.
Racial differences - At the beginning, the majority of powerful characters are not white, for example, Al Ghul and the head policeman.

Todorov
It follows Todorov's theory that we want the underdog to win. This is shown through the scene in the prison when Bruce defeats all the criminals despite his weak appearance. This continues throughout the film.

It has a beginning, a middle and an end, but it shows the beginning (his childhood) in separate sections, so it is not linear.

The Donor - The man in the pub who helps them escape and Maximus
The Despatcher - Flynn Rider
The Helper - Flynn Rider and Pascal
The False Hero - Flynn Rider and Mother Gothel
The Princess - Rapunzel
The Princess' Father - The King

Other than the Hero being female, Propp's conventions are being followed. The characters are based upon the traditional story of Rapunzel so the traditional conventions of the prince and princess have been kept, however to keep it modern (and not sexist..) they have 'empowered' the woman by making her the hero.

Critical analysis of P-02 Thriller Video

Cinematography
A lot of our video is done using handheld camera work which gives it a very shaky and rushed feel to it. Tis increases the pace of the video and adds to the confusion we wanted to bring across. There is also a lot of shaky, over the shoulder shots which allows the viewer to view what going on from both the terrorists point of view and the people in the building. In addition to this, the use of tracking shots during the running scenes adds to this effect. In the scene where the terrorists are running up the stairs, there are a few low angle shots from beneath the staircase which both follows the action of the characters but at the same time hides the identity, and adds to the intimidating feel we wanted to give them.

Mise-en-scene
in our video, we used a variety of locations to try increase the scale of the video. For example, at the beginning we used a long shot of the big complex near the college. This helped the video to look more professional and authentic. The costumes in the video were representational of the different characters, for example at the beginning the newsreader wore a smart jacket and scarf. This is different to the workers in their casual clothing and the terrorists in black covered costumes with balaclavas, which made them more intimidating.

Editing
Additionally, the cuts are quick to increase the sense of disorientation throughout the video, and to make the whole scenario look more dramatic. It also darkens the look of the characters, hiding their identity. When the credits appear they fit in time with music. They then appear distorted and fuzzy, which conveys the corruption in the video.

Special Effects
The shots where the terrorists are breaking in have a black and white effect. This separates the present day and past sequences and makes it darker and seem more sinister.

Sound
Throughout the video there is a voice over that describes the events that are taking place on screen. This gives the video a direction and some context. As well as the voiceover there is an eerie sound track that corresponds with the feeling of the visuals and also fits in with the editing. The news jingle at the beginning of the video also adds to the authenticity of the video as it identifies it as a news report to people straight away.

Analysis of thriller.

Cinematography:
  • Begins with a panning close up shot of detailed information board of reoccurring murders.
Close up: this allows the viewer to look at the written details and pictures, setting the scene and establishing the genre. It also forces the viewer to obtain detail that can reveal the plot.
The use of a panning shot instead of using cuts makes the duration of the shot long, causing the pace to be slow, creating intensity. This could reflect how the murders in the plot are becoming a on going occurrence.
  • When it changes location an establishing shot is used. The shot pans across the the location, every a few seconds the shot fades to black for a short amount of time to make a blinking to effect to make the shot feel like its from a point of view.
  • The close ups are used the show the emotion and feelings of the characters. It also focus on the face to show the blood and bruises making it more realistic. Mid shots are also used to show how the characters are reacting with each other and the location.
  • As the shot changes and goes to a flash back the camera zooms into an extreme close up of the characters eyes as they shut making clearer that the character is thinking back.
  • Whilst in the flash back a long shot is used the show the character walking towards the camera whilst a dark figure walks past the window in background. This adds to the suspense.
  • Once the flash back ends and goes to the present, a high angled shot is used to make the character appear vulnerable suggesting danger is coming.
Editing:
  • A dull coloured filter is used on the whole clip to make the atmosphere and locations feel dark and dingy making it fit the genre.
  • A black and white filter is used to highlight that the shot is a flash back, reflecting how the characters memory is hazy.
  • A shuter affect was used when ellie is looking around the barn, this both gives a point of view shot aswell as making the viewer feel more into the film , as if he or she is sitting in ellies place, the shuter represents the blinking.
  • Shot reverse shot was used when ellie sees emma. This shows the interaction between characters, one of which seems to have gone completely insane.
Sound:
  • The use of digetic and non digetic sound helps to build tension and suspense.
  • The echos of ellies voice help build up the idea of isolation.

Application and micro-element U2 - 64

Sound :
The sound is non diegetic, and gives the effect on the audience that, there is something going to happen, the sound is tension building. As the intensity of the sound increases,  the audiences tension builds.

Video:
Many jump cuts which builds suspense as the audience doesn't know what's happening when, which makes them have no idea what's going to happen. Close ups to the face shows this is serious as there are no emotions.

Mise en scene:
fake blood, shows the audience that, the character has just murdered someone and is trying to wash the blood and maybe conscience off his mind.

Editing:
We used

Use of micro elements in my thriller video

Editing - The edits that we have used are quick, especially the transitions between shots. We did this to give the extract urgency and make the audience feel empathy for the panic of the character. We use edits like jumps cut to increase the pace of the thriller, for example when you can see the killer from the side holding his gun out then there is a quick edit to a POV shot. This technique is very useful for the thriller genre as it keeps continuity while skipping unnecessary shots.

Special effects - We didn't really use any special effects in the extract, apart from running... We made Chris run so that the audience could see that he was in danger and make the extract feel panicked.

Camera - We used a variety of different shots and angles, most of them were used to either make the extract feel panicked or to make the killer character more mysterious and scary. We used shots like POV, hand held and made the camera man run through the forest, this puts the audience in the victims shoes and keeps them involved in the extract. We also used panning shots, this allowed us to see both the characters running through the forest but also it gives the audience a break from all the POV and hand held shots and just lets them spectate what is going on.

Mise-en-scene - We faded the colour in the extract so it was almost black and white but had small tints of colour. We felt that this would give the extract a darker and more sinister look plus it is quite conventional of the thriller genre to be dark and not very colourful. The lighting is the same story we kept it quite dark so that it would enhance the mood. We used a gun instead of a knife because a gun has more impact on the audience plus it would allow us to put in better sounds (gun shots) which again would have a bigger impact on the audience then a knife.

Sound - The soundtrack that we used was quite edgy and quick, this was again to increase the pace of the extract. The sound effects that we used was the gun shot for when the killer fires at the victim, this was used to show that the danger is real and the killer really does want to kill.

Micro-Elements:

Sound
We used Visceral sound to add emphasis to sounds which could be considered disturbing. (Idea from Dexter) e.g door creeking, mascara being put back.

We added sound effects on some of the actions like putting mascara on and putting objects in the bag to emphasis perfection and a aural foreshadow of events.

-There was volcano at the beginning and end, a slightly eery sound that was not very loud because we wanted the focus to be on the visuals (dead person) instead of the sound.
-We used contrapuntal music within our thriller to create a sense of psychosis and distort the veiwer.
-Through some sections we didn't put any music and just used diagetic sound to build up suspense.

Editing
We sped up sections (e.g eye seen) to keep the audience attracted and to add distortion to the video.
We used jump cuts

Match on Actions help keep audience attention.

Mis En Scene
-We tried to make our character dress really smart to help emphasis the factor of being a psychopath.
room all neat and tidy, All cosmetics all in a line to help show OCD (factor of a psychopath)

-Dead person dressed similar to reflect psychopath obsession and weirdness.

-Objects layed out, all important reflect important job.

-Badge to help audience understand the person is important and instead of objectifying her give the audience some background information.

Cinematography
We used a track shot as an establishing shot to help set the scene.
We used exteme close ups on everything with our psychopath but never showed her face fully to objectify and not show her as a full person and reflect the idea of a psychopath by showing her precise grooming.
Match on Actions were used several times to help keep the reader interested and help make the video flow.

Special Effects

Evaluation of micro elements of our thriller U1-32

Sound.

The soundtrack is sound dark, by using a prolonged drone throughout. The dark sound sets the tone of the opening, and the viewer is shown the dark thoughts of the main character. Also, by adding in sharp high pitch noises during the flash backs gives them an individual personality, which helps the viewer see that they are from the past. The distorted sounds let the audience know something isn't right which helps built the mystery. Theirs limited dialogue which was diegetic in this scene. This is because it is representing Micheal's memory, and as he suffers from amnesia.

cinematography.

By using a close up in the image above it shows the facial expressions of the actor. By using this shot it helps to show how the actor is feeling and we used this to show depression. By having his head in his hands it shows the audience that he is in a poor frame of mind and is feeling aggrieved.

The image above shows a close up of the actors hand. This is to show an emphasis on the tattoo that plays a major part in the film. By using the close up it helps to tell the audience that this is important and that they should take note of this.

special effects

there is lots of different types of special effects used in the thriller. For example, when Jonny hit Chiv with a spanner. during the shot an actual spanner was used but the angle of the camera made it look like chiv was actually struck with the spanner. this special effect was used to make the shot look as realistic as possible. Also screen wipes are used, mainly when James is sat on the train station, Jonny walks past and the screen wipes followed by some credits. By using this type of screen wipe it allows the film to carry on rolling but the credits come into the scene, making it look more realistic. Black and white footage is used through out the the first half of the film. Black and white footage is used to help show the audience that james is having flashbacks, this is a very useful and effective special effect.

Editing-

In our thriller opening we used parallel editing. This was to show James characters flashbacks which reveal the narrative. It added to the mystery of the plot which is essential to a thriller. We kept to the 180 degree rule which made it clear to audiences to watch and understand. The editing is quick towards the climax of the attack on my character, this is to build up tension. It also represents James characters understanding of the events in the plot, which lets audiences identify with James character as a thriller conventionally consists of a strong male lead.

What I'd do different.
If we were to re-do our thriller project we would do very little different. However, what we would change is our location at the beginning of the thriller. This is because it is very basic and looks unprofessional for a police interview room as there are books in the background and the room was not suitable on the whole. Apart from this, we would change nothing.

Thriller Analysis

Micro Elements:

Editing:

  • Fade in's and out's were used to make a smoother progression throughout the film
  • the jump cuts used at the start of the video build the tension and suspense at the start of the video, it also develop the narrative to show that something serious is going down.

Sound:

  • At the start the music is good because it creates suspense and is a fast tempo but as it does not change throughout the film which ruins the suspense because its builds the audience up but nothing happens
  • Lack of dialogue means there is not a very good narrative
Mise en scene:

  • Good use of props including drugs and phones to help form the story and make it more believable and realistic
  • Costumes where typical drug dealer clothes like hoodies and trackies.
  • The locations used in the car park with the dark lighting help to represent the thriller genre of the video aswell
Cinematography:

  • close up of person washing his hands helps to represent the genre of a thriller but was not really linked to the storyline very well
  • over the shoulder shot of person creates suspense and mystery because you dont know who he is
  • point of view camera shot was used to develop the narrative as it shows to the audience that he got away
  • The still shots that were used in the car park in the video were a bad thing about the video as it was meant to be a fast tempo to create tension and make the audience nervous when it infact did the opposite.
  • the long shot which is supposed to develop the narrative is pointless because it does not do anything
Special effects:

  • The stunt in our film was a fight scene which was supposed to develop the narrative but was not very believable and not very well explained

Application of micro element to U1 - 44

Special Effects
  • Car sequence
  • Screensaver and general computer use (Google Maps)
  • White noise etc
Creates atmosphere and believability. It wouldn't be a sci-fi thriller without strong use of technology.

Cinematography
  • Long shots to establish location
  • Close ups of computer screens
  • Handheld - gives it a sense of urgency
Fairly simple shot types, but used to give it diversity. Also, manipulates the audience by not showing certain things (location etc). It also keeps the identity of the hacker a secret. This makes you want to watch more as it provides a question to keep the audience captivated.

Editing
  • Parallel editing
  • Split screen
As above, doesn't reveal the identity of the hacker or the location. Parallel editing shows both groups at the same time, and split screen gives it a 'crime thriller' feel. (Character profiling) The split screens also add to the technology aspect of this thriller as it does not use the conventional one shot size/type and creates more interest in the storyline.

Sound
  • Car sound effect - Visceral
  • Diagetic typing
  • Technological noises (white noise noise etc)
  • Score - Sound Bridge - continuous sound
  • Dialogue
Keeps it technological. Fits with the visuals, makes it realistic and believable.
Limited dialogue keeps the tension high and doesn't distract the audience.
Sound bridge keeps the tension high and links the parallel editing together.

Mise-En-Scene
  • Very dark Hacker scene
  • Fancy pancy house
  • Fancy pancy car
  • Lighter for the agents - Means the audience takes sides with the agents because they are 'lighter' and therefore 'better'.
  • Technical looking - white noise etc
  • Props - computers
Lighting makes it eerie and 'thrillerish'. No obvious costumes, so we don't know much about the characters and whether they are 'bad' or 'good', we rely on the lighting, but this could be purposefully misleading.
